Victron Energy Orion-Tr 24/12-15 180W DC-DC Converter – Fitted

The Victron Energy Orion-Tr 24/12-15 is a compact, non-isolated DC-DC converter designed to provide a stable 12V supply from a 24V electrical system. It accepts an input voltage between 18V and 35V DC and provides a fixed 12.5V DC output for compatible 12V accessories and equipment.

The converter delivers up to 15A continuously, with a maximum output current of 20A. Using synchronous rectification, the Orion-Tr 24/12-15 achieves an efficiency of 97%, helping to reduce power loss and heat generation within vehicle and mobile electrical installations.

This fitted package includes professional mounting, electrical connection and operational testing by AAV4x4 at our Brendale workshop.

24V to 12V Voltage Conversion

The Orion-Tr 24/12-15 allows compatible 12V equipment to be operated from an existing 24V electrical system. It accepts variations in the 24V supply between 18V and 35V DC while providing a fixed 12.5V DC output.

This makes the converter suitable for compatible 24V vehicles and electrical systems that require a dedicated supply for lower-voltage accessories.

Continuous and Maximum Output

The converter is rated to supply 15A continuously. A maximum output current of 20A is specified for loads that temporarily require more than the continuous rating.

The combined continuous demand of all connected equipment must remain within the converter's 15A continuous output rating.

High-Efficiency Operation

The Orion-Tr 24/12-15 uses synchronous rectification and has a specified efficiency of 97%. High conversion efficiency reduces the amount of input power lost as heat while supplying connected 12V equipment.

Output capacity is temperature dependent. Victron specifies output derating of 3% per degree Celsius when the ambient temperature exceeds 40°C.

Non-Isolated Design

This model is a non-isolated DC-DC converter. Its input and output negative terminals are electrically interconnected and therefore share a common negative connection.

It is intended for electrical systems where galvanic isolation between the 24V input and 12V output is not required.

Fixed 12.5V Power Supply

The Orion-Tr 24/12-15 operates as a voltage converter and regulated power supply. It is not a multi-stage battery charger and does not provide a battery-charging profile.

It is designed to operate compatible 12V accessories and equipment from a 24V source rather than manage the charging of a secondary battery.

IP43 Protection

The converter provides IP43 protection when installed with its screw terminals facing downward. Correct mounting orientation is required to maintain the stated protection rating.

Victron specifies installation in a cool, dry and ventilated location.

Screw-Terminal Connections

Input and output power connections are made through screw terminals. The terminals accept cable with a cross-sectional area of up to 6mm², equivalent to AWG10.

The two negative terminals are internally interconnected. A secure negative connection is important because an inadequate negative connection may cause excessive output voltage.

Operating Temperature

The Orion-Tr 24/12-15 has a specified operating temperature range of -20°C to 55°C. Available output is derated by 3% for every degree Celsius above 40°C.

The converter must be installed in a location with adequate ventilation to assist with heat dissipation during operation.

Professional Installation

This product is professionally fitted by AAV4x4 at our Brendale workshop. Installation includes:

  • Secure mounting of the Victron Orion-Tr converter
  • Connection to the compatible 24V input supply
  • Connection of the regulated 12.5V output circuit
  • Installation with consideration for the required ventilation and terminal orientation
  • Operational testing after installation

The final mounting location and electrical configuration depend on the vehicle, available installation space and the equipment being powered.
