The Victron Energy Orion XS 1400 is a fully configurable DC-DC battery charger designed for dual-battery systems in vehicles, recreational vehicles, professional vehicles and marine applications. Its wide 9–35V input range and adjustable 10–35V output allow it to operate across compatible 12V and 24V electrical systems, including mixed-voltage installations requiring 12V-to-24V or 24V-to-12V conversion.
Input and output current can be configured from 1A to 50A, allowing the charger to be matched to the available alternator capacity, battery bank and installation requirements. The Orion XS 1400 delivers up to 1,400W at a typical 28V output and operates at efficiencies of up to 98.5%.
Built-in engine-running detection supports vehicles fitted with conventional or smart alternators, including Euro 5 and Euro 6 systems. Configuration, monitoring and firmware updates are available through the VictronConnect app using integrated Bluetooth Smart.
This product is supplied unfitted.
The Orion XS 1400 has a wide input and output voltage range that allows it to be used in both same-voltage and mixed-voltage electrical systems.
Supported configurations include:
Automatic buck-boost control maintains the configured output voltage independently of the input voltage, provided the unit remains within its specified operating range. This also ensures that current does not exceed the configured limit when the input voltage is higher than the output voltage.
The input and output current settings can be adjusted from 1A to 50A in 0.1A increments through the VictronConnect app.
Input-current limiting allows the charger to be matched to the available alternator or other DC power source. This is particularly important where alternator capacity is limited or where other vehicle systems also depend on the alternator.
The output-current setting allows charging performance to be matched to the requirements of the auxiliary battery and its battery-management system.
The Orion XS 1400 can deliver up to 1,400W continuously at a typical output voltage of 28V and an output current of 50A, provided it is mounted with sufficient cooling and operated at an ambient temperature of up to 40°C.
Actual power depends on the configured output voltage and current. Manufacturer examples include:
The 1,400W rating therefore applies to operation at approximately 28V and does not represent the output available from a 12V charging configuration.
The Orion XS 1400 incorporates engine-running detection so charging can be enabled when the alternator is operating and stopped when the engine is switched off. This helps prevent the charger from discharging the vehicle starter battery while the engine is not running.
The controlled DC-DC charging process is suitable for vehicles fitted with smart ECU-controlled alternators, including Euro 5 and Euro 6 systems whose output voltage may vary or fall below the level required to charge an auxiliary battery directly.
The Orion XS separates the starter battery from the auxiliary or service battery. Controlled charging helps protect the starter battery from excessive discharge while also limiting the load placed on the alternator.
This is especially important with lithium auxiliary batteries, which can draw high current from an alternator when connected without controlled current regulation.
In charger mode, the Orion XS uses an adaptive four-stage charging process:
Adaptive absorption allows the charging duration to respond to the depth of the previous discharge. The charge algorithm can also be fully configured to suit the connected battery.
The Orion XS supports lithium and common lead-acid battery chemistries, including:
Eight pre-programmed battery settings are available, while absorption voltage, float voltage, storage voltage and other charging parameters can be customised through VictronConnect. Charging settings must be configured according to the battery manufacturer's requirements.
For lead-acid batteries, the Orion XS measures ambient temperature at the beginning of the charging process and adjusts the charging voltage accordingly. Temperature is measured again during low-current operation in the absorption or storage stage.
A configurable low-temperature shutdown function is also available to prevent lithium batteries from being charged at unsuitable temperatures when valid battery-temperature information is available to the charger.
Built-in Bluetooth Smart allows the Orion XS 1400 to connect directly to the VictronConnect app on compatible Android, iOS, Windows and macOS devices.
VictronConnect can be used to:
The integrated VE.Direct port allows a wired connection to a compatible Victron GX device, computer or supported communication interface.
When connected to a GX device with internet access, the Orion XS can be monitored through the Victron Remote Management platform. Available functions depend on the connected equipment and system configuration.
The VE.Direct connection also supports DVCC system control when compatible firmware and GX equipment are used.
VE.Smart Networking allows the Orion XS to receive compatible voltage, temperature and current-sensing information wirelessly from supported Victron devices such as a SmartShunt, BMV battery monitor or Smart Battery Sense.
This information can be used to compensate for voltage loss and battery temperature, helping the charger apply more accurate charging parameters. Synchronised charging is not supported by the Orion XS.
In addition to operating as a battery charger, the Orion XS 1400 can be configured as a DC power supply. In this mode, it maintains the selected output voltage while the connected load and input voltage vary within the specified operating range.
The output voltage is configured through the VictronConnect app before the load is connected.
The charger can be enabled or disabled using its remote on/off connection or through the VictronConnect app. The remote connection can be used with a compatible external switch or with the allowed-to-charge output from a suitable battery-management system.
The Orion XS incorporates electronic protection against:
If the internal temperature becomes too high, the charger reduces its output power to control operating temperature.
The Orion XS 1400 has an IP65-rated enclosure, meaning it is dust-tight and protected against heavy rain. The charger dissipates heat through natural convection and does not use a cooling fan.
For optimum performance, the unit must be mounted vertically on a non-flammable surface with its power terminals facing downward. Victron specifies a minimum of 100mm of free space around the charger for cooling.
Multiple Orion XS units can be connected in parallel where a system requires greater total charging current. Each unit must be correctly configured and the complete installation must be designed for the resulting current and power requirements.
