The Saber HDX 20,000lb Electric Winch is a heavy-duty 24V recovery winch designed for large touring vehicles, expedition trucks, commercial vehicles and other demanding recovery applications.

With a rated pulling capacity of 20,000lb, equivalent to approximately 9072kg, the HDX is built for situations where substantial controlled pulling force is required. Its reinforced construction, automatic load-holding brake, thermal overload protection and weather-sealed controls support reliable operation in challenging working and off-road environments.

This 24V model is supplied with 25m of 12mm synthetic winch rope and is intended for compatible vehicles equipped with a suitable 24V electrical system and correctly engineered winch mounting structure.

The HDX winch provides a published pulling capacity of 20,000lb, equivalent to approximately 9072kg under the manufacturer’s rated conditions.

This makes it suitable for demanding vehicle-recovery applications involving:

The published winch capacity is not the same as the mass of a vehicle that can always be safely recovered. Terrain, gradient, suction, rolling resistance, rope angle and the number of rope layers remaining on the drum all affect the actual recovery load.

Dedicated 24V Operation

This model is designed for a compatible 24V DC vehicle electrical system. It is particularly suited to trucks and commercial vehicles that use 24V starting and accessory systems.

The winch must be connected through correctly sized high-current positive and negative cabling, suitable circuit protection and a battery system capable of supplying the required load.

It must not be connected to a 12V electrical system or through an undersized voltage converter.

Heavy-Duty HDX Construction

The HDX winch is constructed using reinforced components and materials selected for demanding recovery environments.

Its rugged housing helps protect the internal mechanism from dirt, water and impact, while corrosion-resistant coatings and sealed bearing arrangements support long-term operation in touring, commercial and off-road applications.

High-Torque Recovery Performance

A high-torque electric motor and precision-engineered gearing transfer power to the winch drum for controlled recovery pulling.

The gearing is designed to provide consistent pulling performance under heavy loads rather than the high drum speed associated with lighter-duty winches.

Automatic Load-Holding Brake

An automatic load-holding brake helps control the winch drum when operation stops, reducing the risk of the rope paying out unintentionally while under load.

The brake does not replace correct vehicle restraint, wheel chocks or other controls required during a recovery.

Thermal Overload Protection

Thermal overload protection helps protect the winch during extended or high-load operation.

Winching should be paused if the system becomes excessively hot. The recovery should only continue after the winch has cooled and the cause of the excessive load has been assessed.

Weather-Sealed Control System

The HDX winch incorporates weather-sealed controls together with a sealed solenoid and control system.

This helps protect the electrical switching components from dust, water and contamination during normal vehicle use. The winch and its electrical connections should still be inspected and cleaned after exposure to mud, salt water, deep water crossings or other contaminants.

25m Synthetic Winch Rope

The winch is supplied with 25m of 12mm synthetic rope. Synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle than a comparable steel cable and does not develop sharp broken wire strands.

The rope must be inspected before each recovery for:

  • Cuts or damaged fibres
  • Abrasion and excessive surface wear
  • Glazing or heat damage
  • Chemical contamination
  • Crushed or flattened sections
  • Damage near the drum attachment or end termination

A suitable winch-line damper should be used during recovery operations.

Installation Requirements

The winch requires a mounting cradle or winch bar engineered to support the winch, its mounting pattern and the expected recovery loads.

Installation must include:

  • A structurally suitable winch mounting platform
  • Correctly rated mounting fasteners
  • Secure alignment of the winch and rope path
  • A fairlead compatible with synthetic rope
  • Heavy-gauge positive and negative battery cabling
  • Suitable high-current circuit protection
  • Protected cable routing
  • A compatible 24V battery and charging system
  • Operational testing before recovery use

The final mounting arrangement must provide adequate clearance around the winch, rope drum, electrical terminals and control components.

The 20,000lb figure is the winch’s maximum rated pulling capacity under the manufacturer’s specified conditions. Actual recovery requirements can exceed the vehicle’s weight due to terrain, gradient and resistance.

The mounting structure, vehicle recovery points and all recovery equipment must be suitable for the expected load.
