Fuso FGB71 4500kg Towbar with Rear-Mounted Saber HDX 12V 20,000lb Winch – Fitted

This heavy-duty fitted package combines a 4500kg-rated towbar with a custom rear winch cradle and a Saber HDX 12V 20,000lb electric recovery winch for compatible Fuso FGB71 vehicles.

The rear-mounted winch provides a powerful recovery option when the vehicle needs to be pulled backwards or when forward recovery is not practical. Its 20,000lb pulling capacity, heavy-duty construction, three-stage planetary gearing and 25m synthetic rope make it suitable for large touring vehicles, commercial trucks and demanding recovery situations.

The towing system includes a solid drop-forged ball mount with a compatible 70mm towball, together with a trailer-light ECU interface and 7-pin flat trailer socket.

The towbar, rear winch cradle, winch, high-current electrical system and trailer wiring are professionally installed, connected and operationally tested by AAV4x4 at our Brendale workshop.

Rear-Mounted Recovery System

The winch is securely installed within a custom rear cradle integrated with the Fuso towbar assembly. This gives the vehicle a dedicated rearward recovery system without relying on a portable winch arrangement.

A rear-mounted winch can be particularly useful when:

  • The vehicle needs to be recovered in the direction from which it entered
  • Forward movement would take the vehicle farther into unsuitable terrain
  • The front recovery area is obstructed or inaccessible
  • A controlled rearward pull is required
  • The front-mounted recovery system cannot be safely used

The custom cradle provides a secure mounting platform and transfers recovery loads into the compatible rear towbar structure.

20,000lb Pulling Capacity

The Saber HDX winch has a published pulling capacity of 20,000lb, equivalent to approximately 9072kg under the manufacturer’s rated conditions.

This capacity is intended for heavy vehicle-recovery applications involving full-size touring vehicles and commercial rigs.

Available pulling force reduces as additional layers of rope build on the winch drum. The vehicle, terrain, gradient, resistance and recovery equipment must therefore be assessed before every recovery.

12V High-Performance Motor

This package uses the 12V version of the Saber HDX winch. Its high-performance series-wound motor is designed to provide the torque required for controlled pulling under heavy recovery loads.

The winch must be connected to a compatible high-current 12V electrical supply. It must not be connected directly to an unregulated 24V vehicle circuit.

Three-Stage Planetary Gearbox

A three-stage planetary gearbox converts the motor’s speed into the controlled pulling force required for heavy recovery work.

The precision-engineered gearing is designed to transfer power consistently under load while retaining practical rope-retrieval control.

External Load-Holding Brake

The winch incorporates an external load-holding braking system designed to control the drum when winching stops and help prevent the rope from paying out under load.

Locating the brake externally also helps manage heat away from the synthetic rope.

The winch brake does not replace correct vehicle restraint, wheel chocks or other control measures required during a recovery.

Thermal and Electrical Protection

The HDX winch incorporates thermal overload protection and weather-sealed controls for demanding vehicle-recovery environments.

A sealed control system helps protect the electrical switching components against dust, water and mud within the limits of the winch’s published ingress-protection rating.

IP68-Rated Construction

The winch carries an IP68 rating for protection against dust and water ingress within the limits of the rating when correctly installed and maintained.

The rating does not remove the need to inspect, clean and dry the winch following exposure to water, mud, salt or other contaminants.

25m Synthetic Winch Rope

The winch is fitted with 25m of 12mm synthetic rope. Synthetic rope is significantly lighter and easier to handle than a comparable steel cable and does not develop sharp broken wire strands.

The rope must be inspected before every recovery for:

  • Cuts and damaged fibres
  • Abrasion or excessive surface wear
  • Glazing or heat damage
  • Chemical contamination
  • Crushed or flattened sections
  • Damage around the drum attachment and end termination

A suitable winch-line dampener and correctly rated recovery equipment should always be used.

Wired and Wireless Remote Operation

The winch uses a combined controller that supports both wired and wireless operation.

Wired operation provides a direct physical connection to the winch controls, while wireless operation allows the operator to select a suitable observation position within the remote’s effective range.

The operator must maintain a clear view of the vehicle, rope, recovery point and surrounding area whenever the winch is operating.

Protected High-Current Electrical Installation

The fitted package includes heavy-gauge 0 B&S positive and negative battery cabling, high-current distribution components and 500A circuit protection.

The cabling is securely routed and protected against:

  • Sharp metal edges
  • Abrasion
  • Excessive heat
  • Moving vehicle components
  • Loose or unsupported movement

The completed electrical system is checked for correct polarity, secure termination and winch operation following installation.

4500kg-Rated Towbar

The package includes a heavy-duty towbar rated to a maximum of 4500kg when used within the approved limits of the complete towing combination.

The allowable towing capacity is always determined by the lowest applicable rating or legal limit, including the vehicle, chassis, towbar, receiver, ball mount, towball, coupling, trailer, axle loads, GVM and GCM.

Forged Ball Mount and 70mm Towball

A solid drop-forged ball mount and compatible 70mm towball are included for use with suitably rated heavy-duty trailer couplings.

The fixed ball mount provides a substantial lowered towing position for compatible Fuso and trailer combinations. The trailer should sit as level as practical when loaded and connected for travel.

The supplied ball mount and towball must only be used within the rating of the complete towing system.

Trailer-Light ECU Interface

An electronic trailer-light interface is fitted to integrate compatible trailer lighting with the Fuso electrical system.

The interface allows the trailer lamps to operate without applying their full electrical load directly to the vehicle’s original lighting circuits.

7-Pin Flat Trailer Socket

A 7-pin flat trailer socket provides the electrical connection for compatible Australian trailer wiring.

The socket and interface system are wired and tested for the applicable trailer road-lighting functions as part of the installation.

Professional Installation

This Fuso FGB71 towing and rear-recovery package is professionally fitted by AAV4x4 at our Brendale workshop. Installation includes:

  • Inspection of the vehicle chassis and rear mounting area
  • Installation of the 4500kg-rated towbar
  • Installation of the custom rear winch cradle
  • Secure mounting of the Saber HDX 20,000lb winch
  • Installation and preparation of the synthetic rope
  • Installation of the winch control system
  • Routing and termination of the high-current battery cables

Important Note

The winch is intended for vehicle-recovery pulling only. It must not be used for lifting or suspending people, vehicles or other loads.

The 20,000lb figure is the winch’s maximum rated pulling capacity. It is not the towbar rating and does not increase the Fuso’s permitted towing capacity.

The winch requires a compatible high-current 12V power supply and must not be connected directly to a 24V circuit. A replacement or upgraded battery system is not included unless separately specified.

The published 4500kg towbar rating remains subject to the approved limits of the vehicle and complete towing combination. The lowest-rated component or legal limit must always be observed.

The winch rope, recovery termination, cradle, towbar, receiver, ball mount, towball, electrical cables and circuit protection must be inspected before every towing or recovery operation.

Safe winching procedures, appropriately rated recovery equipment and a suitable recovery plan must be used at all times.
