Fuso FGB71 Dual AGM Battery System with 3-Position Tray and 2 x 120Ah Batteries – Fitted

This fitted auxiliary battery system adds two Hardcore 12V 120Ah AGM batteries to a compatible Fuso Canter FGB71, providing a combined nominal battery-bank capacity of 240Ah.

The batteries are secured in a purpose-built three-position battery tray mounted directly to the FGB71 chassis rails. Charging is managed by a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A DC-DC battery charger, which controls power transfer from the vehicle electrical system to the auxiliary AGM battery bank.

The package also includes colour-coded red and grey 50A two-pole Anderson-style connectors for the required detachable electrical connections. The complete system is professionally mounted, electrically connected, configured and tested by AAV4x4 at our Brendale workshop.

240Ah AGM Auxiliary Battery Bank

The system includes two 12V 120Ah AGM batteries configured together as the vehicle’s auxiliary battery bank. Each battery has a nominal capacity of 120Ah at the published 20-hour discharge rate, providing a combined nominal capacity of 240Ah.

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. In an AGM battery, the electrolyte is held within glass-mat separators between the internal battery plates. This construction is commonly used for vehicle auxiliary electrical systems.

The auxiliary bank provides stored electrical capacity for compatible equipment connected through the completed vehicle electrical system. Available operating time depends on the connected loads, discharge rate, temperature, battery condition and permitted depth of discharge.

Battery Capacity and Discharge Rate

Lead-acid battery capacity varies according to how quickly the battery is discharged. The published capacity of each supplied battery at 25°C is:

  • 120Ah at the 20-hour rate
  • 110Ah at the 10-hour rate with an 11A discharge current
  • 102Ah at the 5-hour rate with a 20.4A discharge current
  • 72Ah at the 1-hour rate with a 72A discharge current

This means the available capacity reduces when the battery is discharged at a higher current over a shorter period. Actual performance also depends on battery age, temperature, charging history and the condition of the complete electrical system.

Battery Temperature Performance

The published capacity figures also show that battery performance changes with temperature. At the 10-hour discharge rate, the listed capacity relative to the rated value is:

  • 102% at 40°C
  • 100% at 25°C
  • 85% at 0°C
  • 65% at -15°C

Lower temperatures therefore reduce the immediately available battery capacity. Battery temperature should be considered when assessing expected auxiliary-system operating time in cold conditions.

Battery Charging Requirements

The published constant-voltage charging specifications for each AGM battery at 25°C are:

  • Float charging voltage: 13.6–13.8V
  • Cycle charging voltage: 14.4–14.9V
  • Initial charging current: less than 24A per battery

The Victron DC-DC charger is configured to provide a charging profile suitable for the installed AGM battery bank.

Battery Self-Discharge

The manufacturer’s published remaining capacity figures for a battery stored at 25°C are:

  • Approximately 90% after three months
  • Approximately 80% after six months
  • Approximately 62% after twelve months

Stored batteries should be checked and recharged as required rather than being left in a discharged condition for extended periods.

Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A DC-DC Charger

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is a controlled DC-DC battery charger designed for vehicle auxiliary battery systems. It manages charging between the vehicle electrical system and the auxiliary AGM battery bank without simply leaving the starting and auxiliary systems permanently connected together.

The charger has an 8–17V input-voltage range and provides up to 30A of continuous charging current at its nominal output voltage and an ambient temperature of 40°C.

Its output voltage can be configured between 10V and 15V, allowing the charging settings to be matched to the requirements of the installed AGM batteries.

Adaptive Three-Stage Charging

In charger mode, the Orion-Tr Smart uses an adaptive three-stage charging process:

  • Bulk: supplies charging current to replenish the auxiliary battery bank
  • Absorption: maintains the configured charging voltage while completing the charge
  • Float: maintains the charged battery bank at a lower voltage

The charger settings are configured during installation for the supplied AGM battery bank.

Engine-Running Detection

The Orion-Tr Smart incorporates engine-running detection. This allows the charger to operate when the vehicle charging system is active and stop charging when the engine is no longer running.

This controlled operation helps prevent the DC-DC charger from continuing to draw from the vehicle starting system after the engine has been switched off.

Bluetooth Configuration and Monitoring

Built-in Bluetooth allows the Orion-Tr Smart charger to connect to the VictronConnect app on a compatible device.

VictronConnect can be used to:

  • Configure the AGM charging profile
  • Adjust input and output operating settings
  • Configure engine-running detection
  • View input and output voltage
  • View the current charging stage
  • Check charger status, warnings and errors
  • Install compatible firmware updates

Three-Position FGB71 Battery Tray

The system uses a purpose-built three-position battery tray designed to mount directly to the Fuso Canter FGB71 chassis.

The tray is constructed from steel with a protective finish and provides separate positions for up to three compatible 120Ah batteries. This package uses two of the three available battery positions.

The remaining tray position may provide space for compatible electrical equipment or a future battery-system change, depending on the completed installation. No third battery is included with this product.

Chassis-Mounted Installation

Mounting the batteries on the chassis rails provides a dedicated external location for the auxiliary battery system without occupying space inside the cab or motorhome body.

The tray is designed for direct fitment to compatible FGB71 chassis mounting points. Final clearances, cable routing and accessory placement depend on the individual vehicle configuration.

50A Anderson-Style Connections

The assembly includes red and grey two-pole 50A Anderson-style connectors. Their colour-coded and mechanically keyed housings help distinguish separate compatible electrical connections within the completed system.

The connector’s 50A designation identifies its connector class. The permitted current through each completed circuit remains limited by its wiring, circuit protection, connected equipment and lowest-rated component.

Professional Installation

This auxiliary battery system is professionally fitted by AAV4x4 at our Brendale workshop. Installation includes:

  • Mounting the three-position battery tray to the FGB71 chassis rails
  • Securing two Hardcore 120Ah AGM batteries in the tray
  • Connecting the batteries as the compatible auxiliary battery bank
  • Mounting the Victron Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger
  • Installing the required battery and charging connections

Important Note

This is the AGM battery version of the Fuso FGB71 auxiliary battery system. It includes two 120Ah AGM batteries, not lithium batteries.

The three-position tray uses two battery positions in this configuration. A third battery is not included.

Any future battery addition requires confirmation of battery type, age, capacity, charging requirements, physical fitment, cable sizing and circuit protection. New and used lead-acid batteries should not be combined without confirming their compatibility and condition.

Available battery capacity reduces at higher discharge rates and lower temperatures. Permitted accessory loads depend on the connected equipment, wiring, circuit protection and complete vehicle electrical configuration.
